Legacy of Design
Article last updated 09/12/2024
- The unbridled imagination of a boy on stilts captures the spirit of architect Richard Sharp Smith who left a lasting impact on the city's architecture. With his engineer partner, Albert Heath Carrier, he designed over 300 buildings, many of which are residential. Favorite motifs for these homes involved hipped gables and pebbledash exteriors. Stately B&B's in Montford and a crescent of houses in Biltmore Village witness his style. (Bronze sculpture by Dennis Smith.)
